Efforts for Conserving Biodiversity

We recognize that biodiversity is one of the foundations of a sustainable society. Therefore, the loss of biodiversity can have a serious impact on business activities that depend on natural capital and on society.
To address this issue, we use the TNFD*1 (Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures) framework to systematically evaluate and organize the dependence and impact on natural capital in our business activities. This will clarify risks and opportunities from the perspective of biodiversity conservation and contribute to the realization of the OKI Group's policy of "Creating a safe society." To increase the transparency of our activities related to biodiversity conservation, the OKI Group is promoting the following initiatives based on the TNFD framework.

  • ※1TNFD(Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures):An international organization established to create a risk management and disclosure framework related to natural capital for businesses.

Governance

Starting in FY2023, we have appointed an Environmental Officer from among the Executive Officers to strengthen environmental governance, including biodiversity. The Environmental Officer is responsible for drafting the group's overall policies and medium-term plans in the environmental domain, as well as ensuring the achievement of the group-wide plans.

Risk Management

The environmental specialist department, under the leadership of the Environmental Officer, monitors external trends and internal conditions, organizes risks and opportunities, integrates them into the Medium-Term Management Plan 2025 and annual environmental plans during that period, and promotes biodiversity conservation and adaptation activities in collaboration with relevant departments.

Metrics and Targets

Theme Metric Factors or Ecosystem Services Baseline Year 2025 Target 2030 Target
Climate change mitigation and adaptation CO2 emissions from company sites GHG emissions 2020 21.0% reduction 42.0% reduction
CO2 emissions from suppliers and product usage 12.5% reduction 25% reduction
Chemical Management Reduction in chemical substance emissions Water pollution, soil pollution 2015 Less than 74,400 kg/year -
Water Resource Conservation Reduction in water usage Water usage (surface water, groundwater) Previous Year 0.2% reduction -

Using ENCORE※2 we evaluate the dependencies and impacts of relevant business activities on biodiversity. Based on these results, we establish metrics to track progress toward biodiversity conservation, guided by the OKI Group Environmental Vision 2030/2050 and the Environmental Action Goals. We continuously refine these metrics and disclose them externally to ensure transparency.

Strategy

Strategies are developed taking into account dependencies (freshwater supply, water purification, climate regulation, etc.) and impacts (chemical emissions, water usage, etc.) identified by the ENCORE analysis.

Category Anticipated Events Risk/Opportunity Impact and Strategy
Transition Risks Responding to stricter regulations Risk There is a risk that stricter regulations related to water usage, greenhouse gas emissions, and harmful substance discharges may increase operational costs and require adjustments in product development.
  • Improving manufacturing process efficiency (water recycling)
  • Introducing renewable energy
  • Reducing and substituting harmful chemical substances
Impact on the supply chain Risk As demands for environmental considerations from business partners and the market grow, there is a risk that failure to meet these requirements will result in loss of trust and competitive advantage.
  • Expanding and creating Environmental contribution product
  • Conducting surveys on suppliers' environmental initiatives
Establishing sustainable business operations Opportunity Efforts to reduce water usage for securing water resources and lower harmful substance emissions to preserve ecosystem services can enable stable manufacturing site operation.
Market expansion for Environmental contribution products Opportunity Accelerate entry into environmentally conscious markets by promoting environmentally contribution product designs and resource-saving processes
Building trust with stakeholders Opportunity Advancing forest conservation activities boosts evaluation from local communities, employees, and investors.
Physical Risks Risks to water supply Risk There is a risk that freshwater resources necessary for business activities could be constrained due to climate change or ecosystem changes.
  • Reducing water usage
Increasing frequency of extreme weather and natural disasters Risk Ecosystem services such as flood mitigation and climate regulation may weaken, raising concerns about impacts to facilities and manufacturing activities due to extreme weather and natural disasters.
  • Strengthening climate change BCP/BCM
