Three-dimensional Shape Sensing

Background

Japan has rapidly declining birthrate and increasing age population. It is faced with such necessities as improving productivity to compensate for serious labor shortages in the fields of civil engineering and construction, and improving site safety for the workers. OKI is researching and developing a three-dimensional sensing technology using LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) system.

Features

OKI’s 3D Sensing technology monitors work at civil engineering and construction sites with LiDARs. (Figure: Construction Machinery and Human Detection using OKI’s Three-dimensional Object Detection Technology) However, when scanning a man or a vehicle using LiDARs, its shape on the backside is not exposed. Moreover, since the shape of construction machinery or a person changes due to movement, the point cloud data obtained from the LiDAR change from moment to moment. Therefore, OKI is studying three-dimensional object detection and tracking using one or more LiDARs whose point cloud data are merged to monitor in a large space.. OKI aims to be robust against shape changes and to perform in real time on an edge device. OKI will contribute to improve safety for the workers in the fields of civil engineering and constructions.
