OKI aims Smart Society
Building a smart community taking into account environmental friendliness and energy savings is a progressing trend worldwide. Through precise understanding of social situations and applying communication technologies cultivated over many years, OKI is aiming to build a smart society that is comfortably convenient, yet safe and secure. This article introduces OKI’s vision of a smart society and key technologies to make it possible.
Sensing technologies are keys to bringing smart society into fruition. OKI’s effort in this area includes the development of technologies to recognize people/face in videos and detect human activity/context from data received via acceleration and radio sensors. This article introduces overviews of these technologies.
Reducing power consumption is a major challenge in multi-hop wireless for smart networks. This article describes a way to reduce power consumption without degradation in communication performance using a method developed by modifying how networks are configured and operating certain nodes in power-saving mode. Simulations conducted to evaluate performance have shown the method reduces power consumption 30% to 50% when compared with past methods.
In the 100Gb/s era, optical network nodes require signal processing technology that efficiently transmits a wide variety of modulated signals. This article describes an optical signal processing technology that transmits large volumes of data instantaneously at 100Gb/s+ speeds regardless of whether the modulation format is phase-modulation or intensity-modulation.
The number of broadband service users in Japan has exceeded 20 million due to the spread of FTTH service. Downstream traffic has also been increasing with the proliferation of smartphones. Additionally, global warming and earthquake recovery/reconstruction are raising power-saving awareness. This article introduces our effort in the development of power-saving, long distance, broadband optical access systems to address such issues.
Recently, there have been interests on EBG (Electromagnetic Band Gap) structure using metamaterial technology, and its application to noise suppression is under consideration. This article introduces a PCB-based compact via-less EBG structure we are currently developing.
