OKI's Physical Education ICT
Making school physical education classes ICT by visualizing the physical condition of students
OKI's Physical Education ICT
OKI has its own mobile wireless communication technology using unlicensed bands. We have developed a system that uses this wireless communication technology to quantify the phisical condition of students in real time. This system will realize new school phisical education classes.
Why don't we use OKI technology to solve social issues in education together?
All inquires, including just an "exchange of information" are welcome. We look forward to hearing from you.
Don't you have trouble with this?
- I want to accurately and easily understand the changes in physical strength of students and how hard they are working
- The desire to quantify and understand the physical condition of students in real time, and to provide classes that meet their needs
In recent years, not only midsummer days but also extremely hot days have become more frequent in summer.
In Japan, the Courses of Study were revised beginning with the 2020 school year, and greater importance has been placed on students engaging in "independent, interactive, and deep learning." Traditionally, in Japanese physical education classes, students were generally evaluated based only on their athletic performance during lessons. However, under the new guidelines, it is also necessary to evaluate students’ growth and effort. This shift is considered very beneficial for students’ personal development and has been widely accepted by teachers. However, at present, there has been no way to objectively assess students’ growth and effort.
OKI Aims for Physical Education ICT
Some students are so absorbed in their physical activities that they are unaware of changes in their own exercise data. With OKI's system, the physical education teacher can check the exercise data of each student at once on a tablet. This allows the teacher using the OKI system to notice changes in the students' exercise data quickly. Furthermore, students can refer to the exercise data collected and accumulated by the OKI system. This allows students to objectively grasp changes in their own exercise data, which can be used to improve their physical fitness in the future.
Furthermore, the system provided by OKI offers a mechanism to share exercise data such as heart rate, number of steps, and calories burned during students' activity in real time. With this functionality, teachers using our system can conduct physical education classes using goals that were not possible before, such as "keeping a constant heart rate during long-distance running" or "burning a certain amount of calories during basketball."
We also believe that the trends in students' exercise data collected by the system can be used as evidence to evaluate their efforts when assigning grades.
OKI has developed a system that uses OKI's unique mobile-capable wireless system. This system is undergoing a series of demonstration tests in actual physical education classes. We have also designed a physical education class using our system with a university professor who specializes in physical education class design, and through these demonstration tests, we have been able to verify the effectiveness of the system.
OKI's strengths in mobile wireless communications
There are three main benefits that can be obtained from OKI's physical education ICT solution:
No equipment costs such as communication costs and running costs
Our solution uses the 920 MHz band, which does not require a license. Therefore, there are no communication costs. This reduces running costs, which can be a disincentive to ICT in education.
Large range of monitoring
With a single base station, exercise data on all students can be collected even in classes where a large number of students from different classes or grade levels move around on a ground measuring approximately 200m x 200m. Our solution will be the eyes that watch over a wide range of children and students.
Real-time and fine-grained vital data collection
Our solution can collect a student's temperature, heart rate, and exercise activity as often as once every 1-2 seconds. This enables teachers using the system to quickly notice changes in their students' exercise data. Furthermore, our solution can be used to implement new data-driven physical education lessons that utilize heart rate changes.
Case Study | A joint study with Osaka University of Education on the use of ICT in physical education learning
OKI conducted demonstration experiments in physical education classes at Osaka Kyoiku University, public elementary schools in Osaka City, and Tennoji Elementary School Attached To Osaka Kyoiku University, and confirmed that the use of a physical education ICT solution system can improve the quality of class content and reduce the burden on teachers.
With a tablet on hand, teachers can keep track of students' exercise loads and physical conditions while ensuring safe teaching. In addition, a questionnaire conducted by Osaka University of Education after the demonstration experiment showed that the satisfaction of the participating students was about 90%, and that the motivation of the students to participate in physical education classes was improved, and that the use of ICT had an effect on the acquisition of physical strength, athletic ability, and exercise habits.
Why don't we use OKI's physical education ICT solutions to solve social problems by using ICT in school physical education classes?
OKI aims to create innovation and build businesses together with companies that will become co-creation partners.
Rather than OKI unilaterally providing the solutions we have introduced above, we would like to improve them by combining the technologies and ideas of our co-creation partners.
"I'm still at the idea level, but I'd like to discuss what I can do."
"We would like to explore what we can do with OKI using our own technology and products."
