OKI and ISID Partner to Provide Cloud Computing Services to Manufacturers aiming for Global Deployment
Offering a chemical information system as part of the PLEXUS cloud computing service
TOKYO, May 18, 2011 -- OKI (OKI Electric Industry) and ISID (Information Services International-Dentsu) have reached agreement in the area of cloud computing services for manufacturers who are aiming for global deployment. Starting September 2011, the two firms will offer OKI's "COINServ®-COSMOS-R/R" system for managing information on chemicals found in products as a new choice from the menu of features provided as part of ISID's "PLEXUS" enterprise product life-cycle management (PLM)(*1) cloud computing service.
The increasingly stringent environmental laws and regulations being enacted worldwide include the RoHS Directive(*2) and REACH Regulation(*3) in the European Union (EU). These measures impose upon electric, electronics, machinery, and other manufacturing industries a growing need to manage information on chemical substances throughout the supply chain, including parts procurement and assembly. The information on chemical substances contained in products to be managed ranges from electronic components and mechanical components to coatings and adhesives. Year after year, regulations cover an expanding range of materials. The task of accurately managing such information and reporting it to customers now poses significant burdens for companies active in manufacturing industries, particularly those active globally and operating both domestic and overseas design and production facilities.
"It is most important to manage and report information on chemical substances efficiently by managing them from the product design stage," says Sei Yano, Senior Vice President, responsible for Solutions and Services at OKI. "We are pleased to have come to an agreement with ISID because the partnership enables offering services that combines OKI's expertise in managing chemical information with ISID's enterprise PLM cloud computing services"
"In addition to offering customers access to OKI's COINServ®-COSMOS-R/R system for managing information on chemical substances contained in products as a choice from the PLEXUS service menu," says Atsushi Yoshimoto, Managing Director at ISID. "The agreement will allow customers to rapidly develop and roll out chemical information systems linked to the PLEXUS PDM product data management service at a modest startup cost."
About COINServ-COSMOS-R/R
The COINServ®-COSMOS-R/R system for managing information on chemical substances contained in products draws on information technology to support various activities, ranging from green purchasing that takes chemical substances into account to responses to partner companies. The system dramatically increases the efficiency of such tasks. It supports a highly developed environment-conscious design that is compatible with the RoHS Directive and the REACH Regulation, allowing customers to rapidly gather and manage information on chemical substances contained or used with various products, including electronic components, mechanical components, coatings, and adhesive materials. Offering compatibility with standardized formats developed by the Japan Green Procurement Survey Standardization Initiative (JGPSSI) and the JAMP AIS format developed by the Joint Article Management Promotion-Consortium (JAMP), the system dramatically increases the efficiency of various tasks, ranging from frequent data surveys to responses and registration.
About PLEXUS
The PLEXUS enterprise PLM cloud computing service provides multiple integrated software-as-a-service (SaaS) application(*4) to support various manufacturing-related tasks, ranging from product development and design to production management and supply chain management for firms active in manufacturing that operate both domestic and foreign design and production facilities. Available from April 2011, it currently provides a menu based on two services: the PLEXUS PDM product data management service and the PLEXUS DRM digital rights management service. In addition to minimizing startup costs for customers, the cloud computing implementation reduces operating costs through monthly optimization of user licenses based on business volume, allowing customers to minimize IT costs in their global business operations.
Glossary
- *1 :Enterprise PLM (Product Lifecycle Management)
This refers to the concept of linking and integrating PLM, traditionally considered a collection of tools for engineering tasks such as design and manufacturing, with core business systems associated with tasks such as production management, purchasing, sales, and marketing. Currently being proposed by leading PLM system vendors, the concept seeks to advance globalization and overall optimization by addressing PLM within the framework of the enterprise as a whole, based on the current trend toward the overseas deployment of design and manufacturing functions.
- *2 :RoHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances) Directive
Enacted in the EU in June 2006, this EU directive restricts the use of certain harmful substances in electrical and electronic devices. On December 13, 2006, the EU passed the new Registration, Evaluation and Authorization of Chemicals (REACH) Regulation, making safety evaluations mandatory for more than 20,000 chemical substances. The REACH Regulation was enacted June 1, 2007.
- *3 :REACH Regulation
Enacted June 1, 2007, in the EU, this regulation requires manufacturers and importers to register and evaluate all chemical products manufactured in or imported into the EU. It also applies various other restrictions, including a requirement for authorization by competent authorities of Substances of Very High Concern and an outright ban on even higher-risk substances.
- *4 :SaaS
A system providing software as a service over a network.
