Kofu factory where a new production line has come online
TOKYO, November 18, 2010 -- OKI Electric Industry (TSE: 6703) today announced that OKI Sensor Device, an OKI Group company that develops, manufactures, and sells reed switches(*1), has reached the landmark figure of five billion reed switch sales. Following the enhancements to the production facility last month, the facility plans to expand sales and increase annual production capacity to 400 million.
OKI began producing and selling reed switches in 1966. Reed switches turn on/off using electromagnetic induction that brings contact points together. OKI established OKI Sensor Device in 1996 and has continued to expand its operations since then. OKI Sensor Device currently holds the world's leading share in the reed switch market, providing products to the worldwide market.
"The five billion sales milestone was achieved in 44 years since the start of the reed switch production," says Tetsuya Takayashiki, President of OKI Sensor Device. "Today's announcement represents a major achievement for us and we would like to express our gratitude to the customers worldwide for making this happen. Moving forward, we plan to meet a diverse range of customer needs by enhancing reliability and functionality of our products."
The scope of application for reed switches, which are currently used for various applications, including automobiles, IC testers, home security equipment, and home appliances, is expected to expand.

Glossary
- *1 :Reed switch
A reed switch consists of a pair of ferrous metal reeds enclosed in a hermetically sealed glass envelope. North and south poles are formed on the reeds upon the application of a magnetic field. The reed switch operates through magnetic attraction. When the magnetism is removed, the reed switch returns to its original position due to the elasticity of the reeds.
