OKI Upgrades "COINServ-COSMOS-R/R", Information System for Chemical Substances in Products, to Comply with JGPSSI's Latest Survey Format (Ver. 4)
Improves accuracy and efficiency in dissemination of chemical substance information
TOKYO, June 1, 2010 -- OKI Electric Industry (TSE: 6703) today announced that it has recently upgraded its "COINServ®-COSMOS-R/R", an information system used to track chemical substances in products to ensure compliance with the RoHS(*1) Directive and REACH(*2) Regulations, to make it compatible with the latest survey format (Ver. 4) released by the Japan Green Procurement Survey Standardization Initiative (JGPSSI)(*3).
OKI plans to release the upgraded "COSMOS-R/R" on June 1, 2010 for the Japanese market. By complying with the latest version of the industry standard survey format, the new "COSMOS-R/R" will allow more accurate and efficient dissemination of information on chemical substances.
The version of "COINServ-COSMOS-R/R" previously sold by OKI to electrical and electronics companies was a RoHS- and REACH-compliant system for managing and controlling information on chemical substances in products and for managing related documents. It supported JGPSSI's survey format Ver. 3 and the JAMP(*4) AIS information sheet.
In April 2009, together with industry organizations in Europe and the United States, JGPSSI established survey guidelines for chemical substances occurring in products and released a new Ver. 4 survey format based on those guidelines in July 2009. OKI has upgraded "COINServ-COSMOS-R/R" in response to maintain compliance with the new survey format.
"By supporting JGPSSI's latest survey format (Ver. 4), OKI's new "COINServ-COSMOS-R/R" will ensure reliable response to the conditions specified under the RoHS Directive and facilitate the monitoring of substances to which the REACH Regulations apply and that are likely to occur in electrical and electronics products," says Sei Yano, Senior Vice President at OKI, overseeing IT Solution and Services Business within the group. "This will enable gathering information on chemical substances instantly and the effective dissemination of information throughout the supply chain. This system will also allow companies to respond to Japan's J-Moss,(*5) which is subject to JGPSSI's survey, as well as other similar legal frameworks, including China's RoHS and Korea's RoHS."
OKI will continue to support corporate environmental efforts through offering products such as "COINServ-COSMOS-R/R".

Glossary
- *1 :RoHS Directive
Adopted in July 2006 by the European Union, the RoHS Directive restricts the use of certain hazardous substances in computers, communications equipment, home appliances, and other electrical/electronic products. (RoHS stands for "Restriction of the use of certain Hazardous Substances in electrical and electronic equipment.")
- *2 :REACH Regulations
Enacted in June 2007 by the European Union, the REACH Regulations require manufacturers and importers of chemical substances to register and evaluate the chemical substances that they manufacture or import. For substances of very high concern, the REACH Regulations also mandate prior authorization from the proper authorities. The use of substances associated with even higher risk is restricted. REACH stands for "Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and Restriction of Chemicals."
- *3 :JGPSSI (Japan Green Procurement Survey Standardization Initiative)
JGPSSI is a council established to reduce the labor required to perform the surveys needed to identify the chemical substances occurring in various parts and materials and to improve the quality of responses received by standardizing the list of substances targeted by the surveys and survey response formats.
- *4 :JAMP (Joint Article Management Promotion-consortium)
JAMP was established in September 2006 as an initiative to promote practical, effective mechanisms for the smooth disclosure and dissemination of information concerning chemical substances and other materials across the supply chain, based on suitable information management. JAMP AIS is the information exchange sheet proposed by JAMP for the disclosure of information on chemical substances occurring in molded products.
- *5 :J-Moss
J-Moss is a JIS standard governing indications of the chemical substances used in electrical and electronic products. The official title of this standard, JIS C 0950, applies to the "marking of electrical and electronic equipment to indicate the presence of specific chemical substances."
