OKI participates in United Nations Global Compact

TOKYO, May 18, 2010 -- OKI Electric Industry (TSE: 6703) today announced its participation in the United Nations Global Compact, with its registration on May 11. OKI plans to advance responsible management as a global enterprise through its support for the Global Compact's ten principles in the areas of human rights, labor, environment, and anti-corruption, aggressively pursuing activities to fulfill its corporate social responsibilities (CSR).

Proposed by then-UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan at the World Economic Forum meeting in January 1999, the UN Global Compact formally took effect as a CSR initiative the following year in July 2000, at the UN Headquarters in New York City. As part of the efforts to build a global framework to achieve sustainable growth through the autonomous efforts of participating organizations based on ten principles in the areas of human rights, labor, environment, and anti-corruption, the UN Global Compact counted 138 countries and approximately 8,000 companies and groups among its members as of March 2010.

"OKI's CSR is founded on the idea of contributing to improving the lives of people around the world by providing products that contribute to the development of the information age, based on an enterprising spirit, as described in its corporate philosophy, " said Shuichi Kawano, Executive Officer and General Manager of OKI's CSR Division. "OKI has established the OKI Group Charter of Corporate Conduct, a statement of values to be shared by all Group member companies to help meet social responsibilities based on the corporate philosophy. It has also established the OKI Group Code of Conduct, a standard of conduct applying to all Group executives and employees. Going forward, OKI will promote CSR groupwide by putting these values into practice."

With its participation in the UN Global Compact, the OKI Group will help build a sustainable society by strengthening these activities and by developing a proper understanding of the social responsibilities that must be met in its global business activities.
