OKI Releases its Social and Environmental Report 2009

TOKYO, October 1, 2009 -- OKI Electric Industry Co., Ltd. (TSE: 6703) today released its "Social and Environmental Report 2009" in both English and Chinese language versions. The English report which will be released on OKI's website (http://www.oki.com/en/csr/report/2009/) in PDF at noon, describes the environmental protection and CSR-related activities implemented by the OKI Group during the last fiscal year (ended March 2009). The report will also be available as a booklet.

Shuichi Kawano, Executive Officer and General Manager of OKI's CSR Division says: "The OKI Group has published its Environmental Report every year since 1999. The purpose has been to disclose environment-related information and to promote a better understanding of our environmental management processes. In addition, we have separately published OKI's Social Responsibility Report since 2005 in order to inform our stakeholders of our social efforts through our CSR-related activities. To report our fiscal year 2008 activities, we have decided to combine these two reports into one document: the ‘Social and Environmental Report 2009’. We believe the combined report covers the contents of the two previous documents in a more concise and easily understood manner without losing any quality in the process."

OKI has structured the report around seven key CSR priority themes. It reviews OKI's focal points, as well as highlighting achievements under each theme. In addition, the report features five articles under the umbrella title "Meeting our CSR commitments" that cover five key challenges for the OKI Group, in which both its stakeholders and the wider public show an intense interest.

The OKI Group will continue to concentrate on the fulfillment of its social responsibilities, based on stakeholder expectations and further build trust with them through the development of its core businesses.

Outlined below are highlights from the "Social and Environmental Report 2009":

Special Features: Meeting our CSR Commitments
OKI introduces the following five activities, which are important to OKI as well as being of significant interest to stakeholders and society in general:

Creating a new value in transportation, which contributes to the greater safety of pedestrians and automobiles, based on technological developments achived in ITS.

  2. OKI's Efforts toward the Realization of a Low Carbon Society

Reducing the amount of carbon dioxide emitted, OKI has achieved the reduction target for electric and electronics industry in Japan which is to improve the basic unit for CO2 emissions with respect to real output* in the fiscal year 2010 by 35% or more, compared to that achieved in the fiscal year 1990.

  3. OKI's Information Security as a Leader in the Information Society

Enhancing information security systems and implementing effective security measures together with the help of OKI's customers.

  4. Management of Production Sites Giving Due Considerations to Customers, Local Communities and Employees

Contributing to countries and regions in which OKI operates by improving the quality of management in product quality, environment conservation, and occupational health and safety.

Status of activities in areas of focus

In this report, OKI explains its activities and achievements in the following seven priority themes: full compliance with laws and regulations; information security; improvement of customer satisfaction; good communication with shareholders and investors; respect for employees; consideration for the environment; and social contribution. For each of these priority themes, the report comments on focal points and achievements made for fiscal year 2008, as well as focal points for the fiscal year ending March 2009 based on actual achievements, to enable readers to understand OKI's overall direction in CSR through detailed examples.
