OKI Starts Shipping Samples of Audio CODEC LSI that is Resistant to Power Supply Noise
Achieves power supply rejection ratio of over 90dB by including internal power regulator

ML26123
TOKYO, July 7, 2008 -- Oki Electric Industry Co., Ltd. (TSE: 6703) today announced it has started shipping samples of its 16-bit monaural audio CODEC LSI, ML26123, which is suitable for audio recording and playback for portable devices. The power supply rejection ratio (PSRR) is improved significantly by the inclusion of an internal power regulator, thus the ML26123 can deliver stable audio performance without being affected by noise from the power supply circuit and peripheral components. The device also includes a composite video signal output, which can be applied to various portable device requirements. Volume shipment is planned from October 2008.
Portable devices such as digital camcorders are becoming smaller in size, which limits the board size for components. Thus, the audio LSI that processes very small signals must be located close to LSIs having large current fluctuation. As a result, noise from the power supply rails that are not properly regulated is introduced at the microphone amplifier during recording. This noise cannot be removed with only the noise reduction notch filter included in previous models.
"We developed this audio CODEC LSI, ML26123, to solve the issues of noise coming through the power supply. The ML26123 has an internal power regulator to improve the analog circuit characteristics, which can be easily affected by power supply noise," said Hiroshi Enomoto, President of Silicon Solutions Company at OKI. "We will continue to offer sound LSI products, such as audio DAC LSIs for small speaker systems, to enable rich sound for small-and-slim personal and mobile applications."
The ML26123 achieves PSRR of over 90dB (500 times more than previous models) and offers reliable audio performance without being affected by the power supply or packaging condition. In addition, by applying OKI's ultra small packaging technology, OKI succeeded in offering all this capability in a mere 2.56mm x 2.46mm size.
Features of ML26123
- Offers stable audio performance without being affected by power supply noise
The LSI includes an internal power regulator for the CODEC to achieve stable recording and playback condition even in a poor power supply conditions.
- Ultra small packaging technology
By applying W-CSP (Wafer level Chip Size Package), OKI's ultra small packaging technology, the LSI could be packaged in a size of 2.56mm x 2.46mm. The LSI is also available in the 5mm x 5mm 32pin QFN format.
- Acoustic functions suitable for portable devices
The LSI includes three types of acoustic functions to achieve high-sound quality recording for portable devices:
- Five-band noise reduction notch filter
This is a filter to reduce noise from a particular frequency during recording. The noise frequency can be set as desired.
- Five-band programmable equalizer
This is an equalizer to correct acoustics during playback. Equalizer features can be set as desired.
- High-pass filter for wind noise reduction
This high-pass filter is designed to reduce wind noise when recording with portable devices. The LSI has functionality that is more advanced than former models with wind noise filtering, and users can select eight types of cut-off frequency and first order or second order filter option.
- Five-band noise reduction notch filter
- Video amplifier included for AV output
The LSI includes a composite video signal output to connect with the AV output terminal of portable devices. While an external capacitor larger than the LSI itself was required for video output in conventional products, this ML26123 does not require such a capacitor. Therefore, the number of external components is reduced as well as the device cost and necessary packaging space.
- Built-in digital microphone interface
With digital microphones, a circuit internal to the microphone digitalizes the voice signals. By including an interface for connecting the digital microphone, noise along the signal path does not affect the input signal, since it's a digital signal, even when the microphone and audio CODEC are separated by some distance.
