OKI Group Volunteers to Support Environmental Education
Helping operate the National School Biotope Contest 2007 hosted by Ecosystem Conservation Society-Japan
TOKYO, Feb. 8, 2008 -- Oki Electric Industry Co., Ltd. (TSE: 6703), OKI Customer Adtech Co., Ltd. (OCA) and OKI Network Integration Co., Ltd.(OKINET) today announced that the OKI Group will support the National School Biotope(*1) Contest 2007, which will be held in Tokyo Japan on Feb. 10. OKI will help enable live voice and video streaming of the contest to those who cannot be at the venue, and will help record the event.
"OKI has been supporting the school biotope environmental education program since 2001. Supporting such activity is part of OKI Group's environmental volunteering activities, such as in forest conservation, which are all part of our Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) activities," said Masataka Sase, Senior Vice President of Oki Electric Industry and General Manager of OKI's Global Environment Division. "OKI will continue to support environmental education and to help conserve the environment to coexist with nature."
School biotope is attracting attention globally as an environmental education program in which children can learn hands-on about the structure of nature and gain knowledge and skills to coexist with nature. In Japan, the Ecosystem Conservation Society-Japan conducts various activities to promote school biotope as a form of environmental education. The National School Biotope Contest, which is also part of these activities, marks its tenth anniversary this year with 153 schools applying. The contest will offer a variety of ideas for school biotope through its rich program which will include presentations from nominated schools, status reports from schools that won awards previously, and a key note speech by Gisela Koch, a biotope expert from Germany.
At the contest in 2006, OKI helped distribute live video of the event to OCA's Tohoku office, located in the northern part of Japan, and Tokushima office, located in the southern. The video enabled parents and students who were not able to attend the event in Tokyo to enjoy it on screen, and OKI received many appreciative comments from them. This year, OCA and OKINET employees will once again support the video streaming of the event. Using OKI's video conference system "Visual Nexus®" they will stream the video to schools in Hokkaido, Tokushima and Ibaraki Prefectures.
