OKI Unveils Voice Synthesis LSI, Enabling Easy Additions of Warning Sounds and Voice Guidance

ML22310 / ML22Q310
Tokyo, Japan, September 19, 2007 -- Oki Electric Industry Co., Ltd. (TSE: 6703) today unveiled the ML22310 series, which are voice synthesis that are targeted for short voice playback such as warning sounds and voice guidance. OKI will start shipping samples today.
Finished products with voice playback functionality, such as voice guidance to enable easier operation or warning sounds to notify danger, are becoming common as the need for user-friendly products increases. OKI addresses this need by introducing an interface with event input(*1) that allows easy addition of voice playback functionality existing designs. The series include ML22310 with internal mask ROM and ML22Q310 with internal flash memory. Because customers can easily customize the voice data on their own with the ML22Q310, when voice data are changed or revised, customers can evaluate the voice on their actual design on the spot.
"To respond to the needs of voice playback functionality, OKI developed two new products with event input method(*1), enabling users to add voice functions to their existing systems. Even customers with no experience with sound playback design can easily add voice guidance or sound effects to their designs," said Masahiko Morioka, President of Silicon Solutions Company at Oki Electric Industry. "As one of the top suppliers of voice synthesis LSI, OKI will continue to provide user-friendly voice solutions that enable added-value to our customers' designs. We will leverage our rich voice technology assets such as OKI ADPCM high quality voice compression technology, our expertise in voice synthesis accumulated for over 20 years, and our support capability that is committed to high-quality sound."

Features of ML22310 and ML22Q310
Implementation of event input method
Both ML22310 and ML22Q310 control voice data in the memory with event input method. Event input method allows starting playback of pre-recorded voice data by using level shifting at the input terminal as the starting trigger. The pre-recorded voice data is stored internally, and can be combined in up to 63 playback patterns or phrases.
Interface specifications such as number of input terminals, the trigger input signal specifications (either rising or falling edge), the interval time until playback, or the time-until-standby after playback, are all user programmable parameters. This flexible interface specification enables maximum utilization of signal lines in the customer existing design to control the ML22310 / ML22Q310, thus allowing customers to easily add voice functions without making significant revisions on the board or changes on the control software.
Device can operate without help of a separate MCU
The ML22310 / ML22Q310 operates in stand-alone mode, thus not requiring external MCU to program it or control it for voice playback.
Availability of flash memory version
ML22Q310 has internal flash memory instead of mask ROM and is completely compatible with ML22310. The flash memory device is targeted for applications with small quantity, requiring short turn around time compared to mask-ROM devices, content that needs to be modified constantly or for prototyping purposes.
