OKI Ships Samples of ML7246, an IEEE802.15.4 Wireless LSI Equipped with USB Interface

ML7246

Tokyo, Japan, September 11, 2007 -- Oki Electric Industry Co., Ltd. (TSE: 6703) today announced it will ship samples of "ML7246," an IEEE802.15.4 wireless LSI equipped with a USB interface. The LSI reduces packaging and development costs and contributes power savings for the IEEE802.15.4 dongle(*1) used in PC peripheral devices. OKI plans to provide this product to remote control and sensor network markets and ship the LSI in volume from January 2008.

"In a 2.4GHz-width IEEE802.15.4-compliant communication, an IEEE802.15.4 dongle is used for applications in communication monitors and PC peripheral devices. Conventionally, these dongles had separate chips -- a USB function microcontroller and an IEEE802.15.4 wireless LSI," said Masahiko Morioka, President of Silicon Solutions Company at Oki Electric Industry. "OKI developed the ML7246, which is an LSI providing a USB interface and IEEE802.15.4 compliant RF, PHY and MAC on a single chip. We believe this chip responds to the needs for an easy-to-use, single-chip LSI that can be incorporated in products at a low cost."

Features

USB interface and IEEE802.15.4 compliant 2.4GHz width RF, PHY and MAC on a single chip
By offering all these functions in a single chip, the ML7246 enables users to develop software to control IEEE802.15.4 dongle on a PC. Therefore, it is easy to establish a communication system based on IEEE802.15.4.

Full-speed USB2.0 interface, HID class
The chip can be operated using an HID class device driver, which is a standard on PCs. Therefore, there is no need to install a specific device driver.

Includes a power-saving function
The ML7246 includes functions to recover to the normal PC mode when frames are sent from another party when the PC is in standby mode. With this function, users can set the PC on standby mode when there are no communications, which saves power for the overall system.

OKI will continue to enhance its wireless LSI product lineup focusing on ZigBee® for short-range wireless equipment and IEEE802.15.4 for the remote control, sensor network and ubiquitous network markets.
