OKI Releases its Environmental Report 2007 in English and Chinese

Tokyo, Japan, September 28, 2007 -- Oki Electric Industry Co., Ltd. (TSE: 6703) today released its Environmental Report 2007 in English and Chinese. The English report released on Oki's website (http://www.oki.com/en/eco/ecoreport/2007/) describes the environmental protection activities implemented by OKI group during the last fiscal year ended March, 2007.

"Under the OKI Eco Plan 21 (2006 version), OKI's environment protection activity plan, the company set targets and implemented various activities in the following three areas: contributions to the environment through our products, contributions to environmental conservation in business activities, and contributions to the environmental activities of society," explained Masataka Sase, Senior Vice President of Oki Electric Industry and General Manager of OKI's Global Environment Division. "With the Company-wide Network-type Environmentally-conscious Management, OKI will continue to implement consistent environment measures and a high-level environment management through 'lowering power consumption in products,' 'reducing greenhouse gas through energy conservation in business activities,' and 'conforming with environmental regulations for products on a global scale'."

The following are examples of activities implemented last fiscal year:

  • Environment activities in business activities

    OKI achieved the electric and electronics industry's common target to "improve the CO2 basic unit real output(*1) by 28% by fiscal year 2010 compared to fiscal year 1990. In the Semiconductor Business Group, OKI achieved to reduce CO2 by 5,500 tons from fiscal year 2005.

  • Environment activities in environment management

    OKI promotes the consolidated environmental ISO certification. In the fiscal year 2006, OKI expanded its consolidation of three manufacturing sites in Thailand area and eight affiliated companies in Japan. In total, OKI completed consolidating 68 companies and 36 sites.

    For the disposal of used products, OKI obtained the cross-jurisdictional Waste Treatment Manufacturer Scheme from the Ministry of Environment in June 2006, enabling to ensure high-level recycling and security.

  • Environment activities through products

    To respond to customer needs and various regulations, OKI Group operates Management System for Chemical Substances Contained in Products. In addition to reduce the total product burden of products, OKI uses product environmental assessment product environment to evaluate whether each product meets the internal environment standards. Below are examples of achievements:

    • ATMs (ATM21SX): Reduce power consumption by 10%, installation space by 30% (from previous models)
    • Printer (C3400n): Cubical content reduced by 64% (from previous model), Smallest and lightest in class(*2)
    • Telecom equipment (IPstage SX): Reduce power consumption by 54%, cubical content by 59%(from previous model)
    • Semiconductor (KGL5115KD): World's lowest power consumption (0.45W) 10Gbps EML driver IC for optical communication

    CO2 emissions / real output (real output=output for each article / the yearly rate of the Bank of Japan's Domestic Corporate Goods Price Index (Electrical machinery & equipment), with fiscal 1990 being 1.
