OKI Launches "VisualCast® VBOX-S/500," its New Digital Video Recorder for Networks that Provide Intelligent Surveillance Operations

Compliant with FISC Security Guidelines

VisualCast® VBOX-S/500

Tokyo, Japan, November 16, 2006 -- Oki Electric Industry Co., Ltd. (TSE: 6703) today announced it has added "VisualCast® VBOX-S/500" to its remote video surveillance system, the "VisualCast" product line up. The VisualCast VBOX-S/500 is a digital video recorder for network applications that enables connection of up to 16 surveillance cameras, including network cameras. This recorder achieves intelligence by automating surveillance operation with added functions including digital recording functions, network functions for concentrated surveillance at centers, and video analysis function for automatic detection of suspicious behaviors from the captured video. OKI starts sales of this product today to the Japanese market together with surveillance viewer software for VBOX-S/500, enabling remote monitoring of voice and video via networks.

Recently crimes at ATMs at financial institutions have been on the increase, including the placing of secret information-stealing cameras, use of counterfeit cards, stealing PINs, etc. In response, financial institutions striving for more advanced surveillance operations have increasingly turned their attention to multi-camera surveillance, long hour recording and concentrated surveillance via network function through centers to achieve efficiency in surveillance operations.

"With interest in security steadily rising, introduction of video surveillance systems is rapidly expanding. Because the VBOX-S/500 can connect up to 16 cameras, it is ideal for simultaneously monitoring multiple bases at remote locations," said Yasukazu Hontama, President of Broadband Media Company at Oki Electric Industry. "By detecting suspicious intrusions through its video analysis function, the VBOX-S/500 provides a sophisticated remote surveillance to users in fields such as finance, retail and manufacturing."

In 2001 OKI began marketing its VisualCast remote video monitoring system, ahead of the industry, which utilizes technology for distributing high quality videos over IP networks, and it has been widely accepted by government agencies, municipal bodies, airports, etc. Compared to its predecessor, the VBOX-S which could handle up to two cameras, the new VBOX-S/500 can connect up to 16 cameras. It is compatible not only with conventional analog cameras, but also with the popular IP network cameras. It is also equipped with OKI's high-quality video transmission technology, the "eVideo engine," to deliver live video while maintaining high video quality over IP networks and to record long hour videos on an internal hard disk (Maximum of 500GB).

The VBOX-S/500 also includes video analysis function as an option. This is a function that automatically detects suspicious behaviors by processing images in the captured video based on previously set detection conditions and outputs an alarm. Users can detect intrusions or suspicious behaviors such as leaving items behind through video cameras in addition to conventional sensors.

Surveillance viewer software, which is being offered concurrently, displays each video from the camera connected to VBOX-S/500 via IP network. This software can be used with a "browser feel" and lessens the burden on a customer's surveillance operations by enabling them to control the system, and manage cameras by group even in a large scale system that is composed with several VBOX-S/500 systems. OKI thus enables customers, through introduction of the VBOX-S/500 main unit and corresponding software as a surveillance system, to achieve a risk management environment fully compatible with the FISC(*1) Security Guidelines.
