Oki Electric Adds New Function to its Software Engine "eSound™ Engine"

"My eSound™" enables high-quality voice communication with conventional phones

Tokyo, Japan, October 11, 2006 -- Oki Electric Industry Co., Ltd. (TSE: 6703) today announced it has added "My eSound™" to "eSound™(*1) Engine," Oki’s software engine, to enable high quality voice communication over IP networks. Based on the voice in lower frequency band, Oki’s eSound Engine achieves high frequency voice for easy listening, which is eliminated in normal phones. This enables users to enjoy high quality voice conversations even when talking with users of regular phones. Oki will provide this new feature to Japan and overseas market starting today.

Though eSound Engine is considered an innovative communication method for IP networks, it had been available only over IP networks. Therefore, users were not able to enjoy the benefits of wideband voice communication when talking to users on regular bandwidth fixed phones or mobile terminals, so to solve this problem, Oki added the My eSound function to its eSound Engine. This new function expands the conventional voice frequency, which was up to 3.4kHz, to a wider bandwidth of over 3.4kHz to enable users to enjoy high-quality voice conversation even when communicating with users on regular phones.

"Adding My eSound to our eSound Engine provides an advantage to phone users, as they can experience easy listening and enjoy high-quality voice conversations even when talking to those on legacy phones," said Masashi Tsuboi, President of IP Systems Company at Oki Electric. "Our eSound Engine can be used in IP telephones, PC-based softphones, PDAs, smartphones, and mobile phones as well as in digital home appliances and game consoles, where the use of IP networks will become more common. We will continue to enhance functions for eSound Engine for realistic voice conversation over IP networks and will thus contribute to the realization of Ubiquitous Networks."

With the advent of its eSound Engine, which Oki has been providing since March 2006, Oki succeeded to offer high quality and stable communications over IP networks by adding its original packet loss concealment (PLC) feature and wideband echo canceller to wideband codecs such as G.722. This solution enables users to enjoy high quality and stable communication over IP networks because it offers communication in high frequency ranges in addition to the normal frequency band. This can also be effective in poor network environments such as wireless networks. Thus, Oki’s "eSound Engine" is truly an innovative communication method for IP networks.
