Oki Develops MPEG-4 Encoder LSI

Achieves high-quality video with its proprietary algorithm

ML86410

Tokyo, Japan, October 18, 2006 -- Oki Electric Industry Co., Ltd. (TSE: 6703) today announced it has developed a single chip LSI, ML86410 that enables real-time encoding of MPEG-4 data. By using Oki's proprietary algorithm and developing an accelerator designed for this chip, Oki succeeded in developing low cost, high-quality video compression. Oki will provide samples of this chip starting today.

"Our technologies for high-speed and high-quality video have been refined through our video delivery server, 'OKI MediaServer(*1).' Based on these technologies, we have succeeded in enabling MPEG-4 encoding utilizing a dedicated hardware accelerator, which previously had to be done using software," said Masahiko Morioka, President of Silicon Solutions Company at Oki Electric. "Because of the quality and cost reduction it can offer, we believe this LSI will be an excellent solution for use in video equipment such as monitoring cameras and network cameras."

Compared to Motion-JPEG(*2), the encoding method conventionally used for video encoding, MPEG-4, the international standard for video encoding, offers a higher compression rate. By using the MPEG-4 standard, Oki succeeded in developing an MPEG-4 encoder LSI with a high compression rate and high video quality. In addition, with the accelerator designed for the chip, the ML8641 does not require a high-speed CPU and DSP as required for conventional MPEG-4 encoding schemes. This solution offers lower power consumption and significant cost reduction. The LSI also maintains its high video quality when replaying fast action scenes or when in the low bit rate mode, due to its high-speed, high-quality movement detection method and precise controlling of the encoded data.

Oki will also offer its high-performance viewer software (MPEG-4 decoder) and "MPEG-4 Network Camera Reference Design," which consists of various Oki video and image LSIs and software to enable customers to easily build an MPEG-4 network camera system.

Going forward, Oki plans to develop audio encoders, LSIs with video/audio multiplexing function, MPEG-4 codec LSIs, H.264(*3)-related LSIs, all based on this chip, thus providing various applications to its customers. This LSI will be exhibited at the OKI Info-telecom Solutions Fair 2006 to be held at Roppongi Hills, Tokyo from November 9 to 10.

Glossary

  • *1 :OKI MediaServer

Oki Electric's video server system, which integrates a video delivery function as a standard server element. Users can easily establish various systems using video and voice, such as Video-on-demand live delivery systems, and live broadcast and surveillance systems.

  • *2 :Motion-JPEG

This is one of the methods to compress video data, using JPEG images in each frame. Because it doesn not compress between the frames, compression rate is lower than that of MPEG.

  • *3 :H.264

This is one of the standards for encoding video data, recommended from ITU since May 2003.
