Oki Electric Launches Voice Synthesis LSI Equipped with P2ROM™
The ML2280X Series includes various memory sizes and reduces package size by half

ML22802, ML22808, ML22804
Tokyo, Japan, September 28, 2006 -- Oki Electric Industry Co., Ltd. (TSE: 6703) today announced the launch of ML2280X Series, a voice synthesis LSI equipped with P2ROM™ (Production Programmed ROM) that can be delivered in volume in a minimum of two weeks after order. Oki succeeded in reducing the packaging size to half compared to the previous product, ML2216, which was launched in February 2006. Oki now offers P2ROM-equipped products as a series, with sample shipments starting today.
Though demands to include voice guidance into consumer electronics and home digital appliances have been increasing, because conventional products were mask ROM equipped, the time from placing an order to receiving delivery took long. Oki's ML2280X Series solves this problem as it stocks the P2ROM voice synthesis LSIs, which have completed the wafer production up to the packaging assembly. Once a customer orders a product, Oki writes the voice data into the chip, conducts testing and ships the product to the customer. Compared to mask ROM voice synthesis LSIs, Oki can now reduce the time from order to delivery by one-third.
"Because we succeeded in reducing the time from order to delivery by one-third, our customers can now optimize the voice data, which is closely related to the product image, until just before volume production" said Masahiko Morioka, President of Silicon Solutions Company at Oki Electric. "In addition, we can now offer our voice synthesis LSI to customers who need wide variety of products in small quantity because the chip is equipped with P2ROM, and can start volume production from 500 pieces. It can be used in a variety of applications such as FA terminals that require small lot production."
The ML2280X Series include three products; the 8Mbit ML22808, the 4Mbit ML22804, and the 2Mbit ML22802. It includes a high-quality OKI ADPCM2 decoder, 12bit DA converter, and low-pass filter for the voice output to provide a natural, high-quality voice. Compared to the ML2216, the package size of the ML2280X Series is reduced by 51%, and offers a variety of memory sizes. Because of its small size, this LSI can also be used in portable security alerts and other portable equipment as well as existing devices with voice guidance application such as home appliances.
Morioka added, "Oki will continue to provide high value-added products by converging P2ROM technology with our voice synthesis technology, in which we have a strong track record."
