Oki Releases its Environmental Report 2006

Tokyo, Japan, October 4, 2006 -- Oki Electric Industry Co., Ltd. (TSE: 6703) today released its Environmental Report 2006. The report released on Oki's website (http://www.oki.com/en/eco/ecoreport/) describes the environmental protection activities implemented by Oki Electric and its group companies during the last fiscal year ended March, 2006.

"The Oki Group puts importance on environmental activities as part of its corporate social responsibility and gives them high priority in its corporate management strategies. We believe this report gives our stakeholders an understanding of our environmental activities," said Masataka Sase, Executive Officer of Oki Electric and General Manager of Oki's Global Environment Division. "Last fiscal year we took various measures to implement the upcoming RoHS Directive(*1) in the EU countries, recycled our used products, and educated our employees on environment issues."

In the Oki Eco Plan 21 (2005 version), Oki's environment protection activity plan, the company set targets in the following three areas: contributions to the environment through our products, contributions to environmental conservation in business activities, and contributions to the environmental activities of society.

To provide environment-friendly products, Oki manufactured and developed dot matrix printers and ATMs that do not include lead and hexavalent chromium, which are restricted in products sold in Europe. In China, Oki reformed its logistics at production plants and now operates in new transportation routes, which reduced CO2 emissions by 540 tons, compared to the previous year.

The following are some of the environmental activities accomplished for last fiscal year.

Refrain from use of substances prohibited by the RoHS Directive

Oki refrains from the use of substances prohibited by the RoHS Directive, not only for EU products but also for products in Japan. Oki Data Corp. conducts "green procurement" in regard to its suppliers and checks the substances that are included in main components to make sure the six substances prohibited in the RoHS Directive are not included in its printers.

3Rs for used products

To reduce waste and reuse resources, Oki promotes the 3Rs (Reuse, Recycle, Reduce,) for its used products. Oki is a collector of industrial wastes certified by the Minister of Environment since November 2003, and is allowed to collect its used products directly from customers as waste. Oki acquired the qualification to collect non-Oki used products in June 29, 2006.

Environmental education

During the last fiscal year, 4,600 employees took e-learning classes regarding Oki's environment policy and environmental activities. Oki also held an e-learning class to educate sales teams on the RoHS Directive and Oki's approach, with 1,300 employees taking the class.
