Oki Develops Single Chip ZigBee™ Compliant Solution

Also succeeds in reducing current consumption by half when transmitting data

ML7222

Tokyo, Japan, June 13, 2006 -- Oki Electric Industry Co., Ltd. (TSE: 6703) and Oki Semiconductor Company, a wholly owned subsidiary of Oki Electric, today announced the development of ML7222, a ZigBee™ compliant single chip solution, which is the next generation in low data rate wireless network technology for sensor networks. By integrating the functions into a single chip, Oki succeeds in enabling lower cost, lower power consumption and smaller ZigBee based devices. This chip includes the CompXs ZigBee Stack™, a software developed by Integration Associates, Inc. Oki will exhibit the ML7222 demo kit at ZigBee Open House on June 15 in San Jose, CA.

"The ML7222 integrates the LSI and microcontroller onto a single chip. This enables our customers to develop smaller and lower power consumption ZigBee based products at a lower cost, which is key to such devices," said Masahiko Morioka, President of Silicon Solutions Company at Oki Electric. "We also reduced the power consumption to half compared to conventional products. We will market this product for applications such as AV terminals for home theaters and new services combining mobile phones and sensor networks."

Applications for wireless sensors have been expanding in the areas of security management, air-conditioning, lighting, heating ventilation and cooling, remote metering of gas and electric meters, distribution management at production sites, and remote control of home electronic products. ZigBee is considered to be the best communication method for developing wireless sensor networks because of its high reliability, low power consumption, and low cost. A regular ZigBee network consists of the following three ZigBee devices: ZigBee coordinator, to control overall network; ZigBee router, to route information over the network; and ZigBee end device, to collect various sensor information or control various devices.

Oki's new ML7222 includes all functions necessary to create a single chip ZigBee based product, including the RF, MAC layer, ZigBee layers and a programmable MCU for user applications. The ML7222 is ideal for creating ZigBee end devices, due to its high level single chip integration. Because the chip includes a 10-bit analog/digital converter and 16 input/output ports, a ZigBee end device based on ML7222 can collect a variety of information with various combinations of sensors and switches. In addition the ML7222 is ideal for ZigBee end devices, and is suitable for use as a ZigBee coordinator or ZigBee router, depending on the application and network scale.

By downloading the CompXs ZigBee Stack and the customers' application software on to the ML7222, customers can easily create a ZigBee device. The ML7222 minimizes current consumption to 24mA when transmitting, and 26mA when receiving, which is more than 50% reduction in power consumption compared to conventional products. Oki has also been successful in minimizing power consumption when in standby mode. By minimizing current consumption, battery life for ZigBee end devices will be significantly longer than conventional products. The ML7222 adds to Oki's existing single chip IEEE802.15.4 solution ML7065.
