Oki Electric Succeeds in H.264 CODEC Video Delivery

Proves practical use of next generation CODEC on commercial IP networks with eVideo™

Tokyo, Japan, May 17, 2006 -- Oki Electric Industry Co., Ltd. (TSE: 6703) today announced it has succeeded in transmitting high-definition video using Oki's H.264(*1) CODEC on commercial IP networks (IPv4 and IPv6), and thus proving the practical use of high-definition video delivery on regular IP networks. The results of this experiment will be demonstrated at Visual Communication 2006, which will be held in Tokyo, Japan from May 18 to 19 at Oki's booth number V2-21.

In this experiment, the video content was encoded (compressed) by Oki's H.264 CODEC, which was stored on Oki's video delivery server "OKI MediaServer(*2)" and was transmitted over commercial IP networks to client PCs in different locations. An FTTH commercial IP network was used as the access line. The video quality that was obtained was equivalent to that of a video delivered live without going through a network.

"We are excited of the success of this experiment, as it offers many possibilities. Streaming video, for example, can now be shown at theaters, and high-definition video content can be watched at homes through FTTH," said Yasukazu Hontama, President of Broadband Media Company at Oki Electric. "We also achieved real-time video delivery of commercial content to small screens from 200-300 inches, which enables a possibility for commercial service of real-time video delivery of various events, using H.264 video transmission over a wide bandwidth IP network."

When sending video over commercial IP networks, usually there are risks of videos stopping due to lack of bandwidth. However, Oki has shown that such risks can be prevented when using Oki's H.264 CODEC with its IP transmission technology, OKI MediaServer. The H.264 CODEC is compliant to the "base line profile(*3)," the core of the H.264 standard, and supports both "main profile" and "high profile." This codec can compress full-size high definition video and the bit rate can also be set as desired. It is a software codec with a high-speed video encoder using Oki's high-definition video CODEC technology, eVideo™.

Oki will continue to contribute to achieving the e-Society by providing information and telecom converged technology and products such as eVideo.

Glossary

  • *1 :H.264

A video compression standard established by ITU in May 2003, also known as MPEG-4 Part 10, established by ISO.

  • *2 :OKI MediaServer

Oki Electric's video server system, which integrates a video delivery function as a standard server element. Users can easily establish various systems using video and voice, such as Video-on-demand live delivery systems, and live broadcast and surveillance systems.

  • *3 :base line profile

This is the technical profile for an H.264 encoding method. Other profiles include "extended," "Main," and other technology and tools exist for each profile.
