Oki Electric Delivers "Audio Visual Training Simulation System" to the Faculty of Dentistry at Hiroshima University

Improves medical skills with IP-based video delivery training

Tokyo, Japan, April 26, 2006 -- Oki Electric Industry Co., Ltd. (TSE: 6703) today announced its delivery of "Audio Visual Medical Training Simulation System" to the Faculty of Dentistry at Hiroshima University. Based on Oki's video delivery integrated server, "OKI MediaServer," a high quality video of dentistry doctors conducting medical training is simultaneously delivered live to each trainee's PC. Hiroshima University started operation of this system from April 2006.

"We believe this simulation system will help the Faculty of Dentistry at Hiroshima University to conduct an efficient practical training. The OKI MediaServer(*1), equipped with eVideo™(*2), provides high definition, low latency for live delivery and can distribute the training from various angles, including close-ups, which will help students see detailed operations," said Yasukazu Hontama, President of Broadband Media Company at Oki Electric. "The system enables smooth training as students will be able to practice their training by watching the video of the faculty's demonstration."

Practical training at the Faculty of Dentistry at Hiroshima University was conducted by observing a demonstration performed by the faculty. However, with many students, it was difficult for them to see detailed operations and Hidemi Kurihara, the Dean of the Faculty of Dentistry at Hiroshima University, has suggested a visual audio system using video. The system Oki provides encodes the video of a faculty performing medical training on a mannequin into MPEG-4 format, which is then delivered to all the students' PCs via private IP infrastructure. The system adopts multi-cast method to send the same data to specific people on the network, which is a method that efficiently uses the internal IP infrastructure. The videos are stored in the VOD server, and can replay via video-on-demand method, providing an efficient medical training. Oki will offer its OKI MediaServer to integrate information and communications systems to the Japanese market.
