Tokyo, Japan, March 7, 2006 -- Oki Electric Industry Co., Ltd. (TSE: 6703) today announced the launch of VisualCast®-SS VBOX-M, a small and lightweight portable encoder weighting less than 2kg. Oki adds the VBOX-M as a new member of its video surveillance system VisualCast-SS product lineup. VBOX-M is exhibited at Oki's booth (#SS242) at the SECURITY SHOW 2006 that is held at Tokyo Big Sight from March 7 to 10.

"Since the launch in 2001, we have been expanding the VisualCast-SS product line up and have provided various models to national government and local government operations, airport facilities and enterprises in Japan, for their video surveillance systems at fixed locations," said Yasukazu Hontama, President of Broadband Media Company at Oki Electric. "The VBOX-M will provide portability, enabling users to monitor, for example, event venues where surveillance locations or objects may change within the situation, or disaster sites, where temporary monitoring for a few hour or days, is required."

The VBOX-M is a handheld encoder with a size of 125mm (W) x 82.2mm(D) x 221.5m(H), and weight lighter than 2 kg that can be used as a portable surveillance system. It is equipped with interfaces for wired LAN and wireless LAN, as well as a mobile transmission slot that can be used with a FOMA card(*1) or a Personal Handyphone System (PHS) card. By simply connecting a video camera to the VBOX-M, users can send real-time video with a single touch of a button. VBOX-M adopts H.264 CODEC, the latest IP video transmission method, enabling video to be sent using only one-third to two-thirds of the bandwidth required with conventional systems, while maintaining a MPEG-2 like quality. The VBOX-M adopts the constant bit rate method that maintains a certain video transmission bandwidth for encoding and decoding video for video delivery control, thus providing a stable video transmission.

Other products in the VisualCast-SS lineup includes VisualCast-SS VBOX-S, the smaller and lighter encoder and decoder, and Network Recorder, a video storage device that can be placed anywhere on the system.
