Oki Electric Launches 40Gb/s Electro Absorption Modulated Laser
With Narda's Amp Driver, provides optimum solution for the VSR optical transporter market

OL5157M
Anaheim, California, March 6, 2006 -- Oki Electric Industry Co., Ltd. (TSE: 6703) today announced the launch of the OL5157M, a 40Gb/s Electro Absorption Modulated Laser (EML), to be provided to the VSR (Very Short Reach) optical transporter market. By optimizing the matching between EML and the 40Gb/s broadband driver amplifier provided by Narda, an L-3 Communications company, this solution enables to reduce the bit error rate (BER) in data transport.
"This is a solution that reduces the time and cost our customers spend in testing the combination of EA modulators and amplifiers to convert electric signals into optical signals. Thus, provides an optimum solution in building a 40Gb/s VSR transmitter for high capacity networks," said Masayuki Tsuboi, President of Optical Components Company at Oki Electric. "With this solution, which will be available to the worldwide 40Gb/s VSR transponder market, our customers can easily manufacture high-quality transmitters."
Oki's OL5157M integrates a 1.5mm distributed feedback (DFB) laser and an EA modulator into a single chip, and is equipped with DC bias circuit, with features of 5 dBm CW high optical power output, dynamic extinction ratio larger than 9 dB at 40Gb/s, and operates under a low modulation voltage of 3Vpp. This OL5157M is optimized with Narda's GaAs IC module (FO-MDA-40-13), which is capable of data rates to 44Gb/s that comes with V or GPPO type connector, has an output voltage adjustable in the 2.5 Vpp to 4 Vpp range, and has a built-in electronic circuit for cross-point control to optimize the optical eye diagram.
By optimizing Oki's OL5157M and Narda's FO-MDA-40-13, the two companies provide a solution that significantly improves the major problem of high frequency matching performances. This solution thus enables lower jitter and reduces BER, which as a result, provides the best-suited transmission quality for a 40Gb/s VSR optical transmission multi source agreement (MSA) transponder. Oki's 40Gb/s EML module (OL5157) and Narda's Driver Module (FO-MDA-40-13) will be exhibited at the Optical Fiber Communication Conference & Exposition and the National Fiber Optic Engineers Conference (OFC/NFOEC2006) that will be held at Anaheim, California from March 5 to 10, 2006. Oki is exhibiting at Booth #3447 and Narda at Booth #3355.
