Oki Electric Succeeds in developing 13-bit LCD Source Driver with 500Mbps High Speed Interface
A Key Component for High-Definition LCD Systems

Tokyo, Japan, January 24, 2006 --Oki Electric Industry Co., Ltd. (TSE: 6703) today announced the development of MT3100, a 13-bit digital source driver for high definition liquid crystal display (LCD) systems. The MT3100 is the first to adopt Oki's originally developed high-speed image transferring method, "flat panel low voltage differential signaling" (FP-LVDS), resulting in a data transfer speed of 500Mbps. Samples will be available worldwide from March 2006.
"We believe this world's first 13-bit source driver will be actively put to use in full-HDTV((*1)) LCD TVs and in high-definition LCD monitors for medical and graphic-use, in which complex color management is required," said Akira Kamo, President of Silicon Solutions Company at Oki Electric." We also plan to promote our FP-LVDS technology to LCD module manufacturers, aiming to achieve at de-facto standard for high-speed interfaces"
The MT3100 is the world's first 13-bit source driver with approximately 8200 gray-scale levels. It has 13-bit resolution of gray-scale for each output port, which enables it to individually control the characteristics of voltage-transmittance rate for RGB, an important parameter of LCDs, resulting in a clearer and more natural image than with current controls.
Oki developed the FP-LVDS, its original high-speed data transferring method based on the commonly used mini-LVDS((*2)) method. It is compatible with the mini-LVDS and with full HDTV display, and to handle the required 120Hz frame-rate, Oki succeeded in enabling a transfer speed of 250MHz, which is 1.4 times faster than under current conditions. The FP-LVDS uses the "multi-drop((*3))" method, which has fewer limitations as to number of output ports (channels), compared to the "point-to-point((*4))" method which sends data individually from a timing-controller. With this advance, Oki achieved simplification of system design and reduction of development costs and turn around time.
Oki will continue to enhance its product lineup for devices with high output pin counts and will work to make FP-LVDS, the new transfer method, an industry standard.
Glossary
- *1 :Full-HDTV
Display with 1920 x 1080 pixels. 1080 progressive with non-interlaced scan
- *2 :Mini-LVDS
A method to transfer image data for LCD panels. It can reduce wiring by combining the conventional parallel data with serial. With low voltage signaling, it can reduce both EMI and RF radiation.
- *3 :Multi-drop
A method for receiving signals from time controllers (T-CON) in a shared driver. T-CONs are not dependent on driver outputs, though termination resisters are necessary.
- *4 :Point-to-point
A method for routing the data bus individually from T-CON to each source driver. It offers the advantages that termination resisters can be eliminated and the number of buses can be minimized, but it is still necessary to adjust clock and data speeds, and to re-design T-CON when driver channels are changed.
