Tokyo, Japan, April 26, 2005 -- Oki Electric Industry Co., Ltd. (TSE: 6703) today announced the development of three new models of Pulse Code Modulation (PCM) sound generator LSIs for mobile phones. The new products, ML2863, ML2873 and ML2865, come in different sound quality and polyphonic tones, which sample shipments start from April and volume shipment from June 2005. Oki will expand its product lineup by adding these three new models to the existing ML2871 and ML2873, all of which are compatible in software and pins.
"Because our family products are pin and software compatible, handset makers can easily replace the chip to any of our family products to offer different sound quality and number of polyphonic tones, as such preference differ depending on the regions," said Akira Kamo, President of Silicon Solutions Company at Oki Electric. "In addition, based on the Wafer Level Chip Size Packaging technology, we were able to develop the world's smallest sound generator package, contributing to the trend of compact mobile handsets."
The characteristic of GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications) mobile phones, holding 60% of the world's mobile phone, is that it can be used in any GSM service area throughout the world. This is enabled through the SIM (Subscriber Identity Module) card, holding information of phone numbers and carriers, which differ from country to country. Despite major differences in preference of ring tones depending on regions, the same sound quality has been used around the world. To solve such differences in preference, Oki adds three new models to its replaceable sound generator chip family offering a total of five models. The chips suite various design environments as they come in the world's smallest package based on W-CSP of 4.2 X 3.6 mm, and standard QFN (Quad Flat Non-leaded) package.
To achieve easier content creation for mobile phones, Oki has held seminars in China and Taiwan to enhance its relationship with content providers. Oki will also enable users to download tools and post know-how for optimizing ring tones on the Internet, disclose which ring tone format is compliant to certain mobile phones, strengthen support for content providers around the world, and establish environment to distribute various ring tones throughout the world.
