Oki Unveils the World's First 32 bit ARM® MCU with built-in USB2.0 controller and HDD Interface

ML696200 series photo Tokyo, Japan, September 21, 2004 -- Oki Electric Industry Co., Ltd. (TSE: 6703) today announced that it has developed a series of ARM946E™ core based single chip microcontrollers, the ML696200 series, that offers built-in interfaces for High speed USB2.0 and hard disk drive (HDD). Sample shipment starts from November 2004, and volume shipment from January 2005.

The ML696200 series consist of two models; the ML69Q6203, comes in on-chip 512KB flash ROM, and the ML696201 without a ROM. Both products are based on ARM946E general-purpose 32-bit microcontroller core developed by µPLAT®946E88, Oki's integrated platform solution for system LSI development. Conventionally the USB2.0 High speed interface, the ATA/ATAPI interface, and the SmartMedia standard 2000 compliant NAND Flash interface, were three different chips. However, Oki integrated these interfaces onto a single chip, which enables mobile equipment for storage applications to be smaller, lighter and lower power consumption.

"Oki is the world's first company to integrate necessary interfaces onto an ARM9 based general purpose microcontroller," said Akira Kamo, President of Silicon Solutions Company at Oki Electric. "As ARM CPU is known for its high performance, low power consumption and high code density, the new microcontrollers will help develop intelligent storage equipment that need security functions and high speed data processing, such as HDD with fingerprint authentication, flash memory and digital photos."

This ARM946E core microcontroller is also equipped with a multiply-accumulate function that can execute multiply-accumulate operation in a single cycle. It can be done in such high speed because of the use of separate 8KB cache memories for instructions and data, and also it can encrypt, decode, compress and expand the data.

Oki aims to sell 400 thousand units of this series monthly by the fiscal year ending March 2006, targeting the digital home appliances, handheld disk storage products, and PDA equipment market. In addition, utilizing its ARM CPU characteristics and unique technologies in W-CSP (Wafer Level Chip Size Package) small size packaging and low power consumption such as SOI (Silicon on Insulator), Oki will continue to develop LSIs for mobile terminals.
