Tokyo, Japan, September 16, 2004 -- Oki Electric Industry Co., Ltd. (TSE: 6703) today released its Environmental Report 2004. The report released on Oki's website (http://www.oki.com/en/eco/ecoreport/) describes the environmental protection activities implemented by Oki Electric and its group companies during the fiscal year ended March 2004.

"Oki puts importance on environmental activities as part of its CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) and gives high priority to such activities in the corporate management strategies," said Yutaka Maeda, Senior Vice President of Oki Electric, responsible for all of the Oki group's environmental protection strategies. In the Oki Eco Plan 21 (2003 version), Oki's environment protective activity plan, the company set a target in three areas: global warming prevention, resource recycling and chemical substance reduction. Last fiscal year Oki focused on reducing chemical substance contained in its products. Oki expanded the usage of COSMOS, the information system for chemical substances contained in products, that can easily gather information on how much chemical substances are contained in products at the design level. In addition, Oki has been promoting green procurement and achieving lead-free in new information systems to prepare for RoHS Directive, the EU's regulations for the restriction of hazardous substances contained in electric and electronic equipment, which starts from July 2006.

For global warming prevention, Oki worked on reducing CO2 by reducing the number of servers and developing low power consumption printers and achieved to reduce CO2 by 9,000 tons. The company also reduced chemical substance by calculating how much chemical substance each product contains at the designing level. Utilizing the technologies and knowledge Oki cultivated over the years on environment, from the fiscal year ending March 2004, the company started business to provide environment solutions, such as providing a lead-free soldering qualification recognition program to educate lead-free soldering technicians to achieve lead-free products.
