Oki Establishes Sales Bases for ATMs and Printers in Beijing and Shanghai
Tokyo, Japan, March 16, 2004 -- Oki Electric Industry Co., Ltd. (TSE: 6703) today announced that its manufacturing and sales company for ATMs and printers in China, Oki Electric Industry (Shenzhen) Co., Ltd. ("OSZ"), has established branches in Beijing and Shanghai in order to enhance Oki's activities in China. Both branches have already begun full-scale operations.
"China is absolutely critical market in all segments in which Oki is seeing dramatic growth, including ATMs and printers," said Yutaka Maeda, Senior Vice President at Oki Electric, responsible for Oki's business strategies in China. "Oki has adopted a strategy of deploying products that have proven successful in Japan to the Chinese market, offering this market products of the highest quality, backed by extensive experience and a solid reputation."
Two branches were newly established in Beijing and Shanghai to accompany the introduction of an ATM designed exclusively for the promising Chinese market and an expanded printer line-up also aimed at this market. Previously, OSZ sales activity was conducted from the headquarters located in Shenzhen, with help from its liaison office in Beijing. The OSZ Beijing branch conducts sales and marketing for both ATMs and printers, and a technical support division was also established at this branch. The OSZ Shanghai branch focuses on ATM business, providing sales and conducting SE business. In addition, OSZ has established a Financial Equipment Business Division, which combines development, production, sales, and service of products for financial institutions in China.
The Oki group has enhanced its activities in China in all areas, including information systems, telecommunications systems, and semiconductors. In 2003 Oki introduced ATMs dedicatedly designed for the Chinese market, machines that store an extraordinary large volume of banknotes within a compact body, offering rapid cash withdrawal and deposit operations. The system also implements a banknote recycling method developed by Oki first in the world in 1983, in which deposited notes are recycled for reuse in cash withdrawals from the ATM, thereby enabling effective cash utilization.
For the Chinese printer market, Oki launched its color page printers in August 2003, which have shown consistently strong sales also in the US and Europe. The company has a long history of experience in the printer market, having introduced business-use dot matrix printers in the 1980s, followed by a range of monochrome page printers in the late 1990s.
In the semiconductor sector, Oki established Oki Electronics (Hong Kong) Ltd. in 1983 and OKI Semiconductor Shanghai Co., Ltd. in 2002. Two companies in the Oki group handle telecommunication systems in China; Changzhou OKI-GEG Telecoms Ltd., a joint operation established in 1997 to manufacture telecommunications equipment, and OKI Software Technology Co., Ltd., a software development and system integration base established in 2001; the latter company began sales of Oki's CTI server, CTstageR, in 2003.
By establishing sales bases for ATMs and printers and strengthening its marketing and sales organization, Oki is further enhancing its business activities in China. The company has established a target of 70 billion yen for its Chinese business, including sales, development, and production for the fiscal year ending Mar. 31, 2006, doubling the amount for the current fiscal year.
