Oki Electric and BEA Systems Form Global Strategic Alliance to Develop a Converged IT Communications Platform
- Collaborative Development Designed to Integrate Enterprise Applications and Communications Technologies -
SAN JOSE, Calif. and Tokyo - Dec. 19, 2003 -- BEA Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq: BEAS), the world's leading application infrastructure software company, and Oki Electric Industry Co., Ltd. (TSE: 6703) today announced a global alliance agreement to develop a new business applications platform that will be designed to converge information technology and communications and promote the creation of related solutions. The new business applications platform will be designed to combine Oki Electric's Internet Protocol (IP) communications technology with BEA WebLogic Server™ 8.1. As part of the agreement, BEA and Oki Electric plan to cooperate on joint sales and marketing activities for the new business applications platform.
The companies plan to collaborate to create a unified platform for delivering various IT services that combine Oki Electric's IP communications technologies, such as voice over IP (VoIP) and Session Initiation Protocol (SIP), with BEA's application infrastructure software. Oki Electric plans to develop the SIP module on BEA WebLogic Server 8.1 in the first quarter of 2004. This work is designed to make it easier for customers to integrate enterprise applications and communications technologies in order to offer new communications services. For example, customers could be able to communicate with business and personal associates using various IP communications methods, such as IP telephony, video conferencing, instant messaging and presence information.
BEA and Oki Electric plan to cooperate on joint sales and marketing activities for the new business applications platform. For the Japanese market, Oki will sell a SIP module and software components along with BEA WebLogic Enterprise Platform™ to the enterprise customers and independent software vendors. Additionally, Oki Electric and its partners plan to create solutions utilizing this platform to further enhance its value for clients. Oki Electric also intends to integrate this development work and BEA WebLogic Enterprise Platform to its CenterStage® AS platform applications server, effectively combining voice communication and Web technologies.
"BEA WebLogic can offer our customers and partners a faster time to value by converging application development and application integration into a unified, simplified and extensible application infrastructure platform," said Olivier Helleboid, executive vice president of products, BEA Systems. "BEA and Oki Electric are partnering worldwide to converge Internet and communications technologies so that customers can develop and supply a new generation of services that drive top-line revenue."
"As part of our company-wide strategy, Oki places great importance on the convergence of IT and telecommunications, and we are offering such a converged product under the brand name AP@PLAT," said Toshinao Takeuchi, president of NetBusiness Solutions Company at Oki Electric. "By integrating Oki's strength in VoIP, computer telephony integration, security and networking technologies with BEA's world-leading web transaction system, I believe this partnership will contribute to improving customers' business efficiencies."
Oki Electric and BEA have worked for many years already in the Japanese market, leveraging Oki Electric's extensive industry expertise and system integration experience to jointly develop the market for BEA Tuxedo® and BEA WebLogic® applications and solutions. This new agreement extends the companies' existing relationship worldwide, enabling Oki to further leverage its industry-leading SIP technology as a global partner of BEA.
