Oki Releases the Environmental Plan for the Fiscal Year ending March 2004
- Plans to Achieve Lead-free Solder for All Products in Japan -

Tokyo, Japan, July 17, 2003 -- Oki Electric Industry Co., Ltd. (TSE: 6703) today released on its web site, Oki Eco Plan 21 (Sky-High 2003), the environmental protection activity plan for the fiscal year ending March 2004 (http://www.oki.com/en/eco/ecoplan.html). The plan summarizes activity plans for this fiscal year in order to implement more efficient and active environmental protection activities.

For this fiscal year, Oki has identified reducing the environmental burden from business activities and creating products and operational methods to solve environmental issues as the main themes. The company has set concrete goals focusing on activities such as reduction of CO2 emission through products and reform of operation and restricting use of chemical substances that effect the environment.

As measures to reduce CO2 emission in products, Oki will implement power-saving measures by mounting low power consumption LSIs into products, and making energy consumption more efficient by utilizing heat radiation solutions with 'Cerac a,' the ceramic coating film with a high heat radiation effect. For measures to reduce CO2 emission through reform of operations, Oki plans to integrate internal-use servers, reform logistics, and introduce e-learning. The company will also restrict use of chemical substances that effect the environment by achieving lead-free solder and expanding green procurement.

"The Oki group positions the performance of an environment-friendly business to be one of its core management policies. We have actively deployed protection activities such as obtaining ISO14001 certification, reducing environmental burden, and disclosing environmental accounting and reports," said Masayoshi Ino, Executive Vice President at Oki Electric, responsible for all the Oki group's environmental protection strategies. "Based on the Oki Eco Plan21 (Sky-High 2003), we will continue to promote business activities which regard the environment as one of Oki's important customers."

The company established Oki Eco Plan 21 in September 1999, as an environmental protection activity plan, and has worked on the activities throughout the Oki group. As a result, in the fiscal year ended March 2003, Oki succeeded in achieving zero emissions in its major manufacturing facilities in Japan, two years ahead of time, and reduced the final amount processed by 75% relative to the former fiscal year.
