Oki Introduces New 32-bit Microcontroller Series with ARM® Architecture, Enhancing its General Purpose Microcontroller Family
Tokyo, Japan, June 18, 2003 -- Oki Electric Industry Co., Ltd. (TSE: 6703) today announced that it will introduce two new series of ARM® CPU-based 32-bit microcontrollers -- the ML674001 series and the ML675001 series -- to the worldwide market.
These new chips are high-performance standard microcontrollers for a comprehensive range of applications, featuring ARM's industry-leading 32-bit RISC architecture based on the ARM7TDMI® core. Oki positions these series of products as the entry model for those upgrading from 8-bit and 16-bit microcontrollers to 32-bit devices. The company commenced sample shipment in June 2003.
"Oki has been providing 32-bit ARM-based microcontrollers meeting market requirements for years, thanks to the ARM CPU, which is highly evaluated for its high performance, low power consumption, and effective code characteristics," said Akira Kamo, President of the Silicon Solutions Company at Oki Electric. "By adding the new series, we are able to take significant steps toward strengthening our lineup of 32-bit ARM microcontrollers, which have great potential for use in a wide variety of applications."
Devices in the new series are general-purpose 32-bit microcontrollers, constructed on µPLAT®, Oki's unique integrated platform with ARM7TDMI for development of system-on-chip. The two lines consist of the ML674001 series, comprised of three products: the ML674001, the ML67Q4002, and the ML67Q4003; and the ML675001 series, consisting of the ML675001, the ML67Q5002, and the ML67Q5003.
In order to meet the requirements of a variety of applications, these general-purpose microcontrollers offer abundant functions, including 32-K byte RAMs and timers, PWM (pulse width modulation), UARTs (universal asynchronous receiver transmitters), an I2C (inter integrated circuit), a WDT (watch dog timer), GPIOs (general purpose I/O ports), AD converters, DMA controllers, and an SDRAM controller. One of the unique characteristics of the ML674001 series and the ML675001 series is that ROMs (including Flash memories), SRAMs, DRAMs, or I/O devices can be directly connected to the SDRAM controller in the chip.
The microcontrollers also ensure operation in a wide range of temperature range from -40°C to +85°C, which also makes the chip suitable with a variety of equipment, including PC peripherals, digital home appliances, digital communications equipment, and industrial applications. These devices operate at a maximum frequency of 33 MHz for the ML674001 series and at a maximum frequency of 60 MHz for the ML675001 series. As an 8-K byte unified cache memory is included with the ML675001 series, the chip is capable of high-speed operation. All six microcontrollers are of pin-compatible design, allowing for easier upgrade from the ML674001 series to the ML675001 series with minimum program change and without board layout change, even in cases where customers wish to improve the performance of their existing systems using the ML674001 series.
"As the 32-bit embedded market is expected to grow, Oki further enhances its product offerings, which provide a variety of functions that meet customer demand," said Kamo.
