Oki Introduces 10-Gbps Surface-Mount Optical Receiver Modules Compliant with a Leading Multi-Source Agreement

10Gbps Surface-Mount Optical Receiver Module OD9241N Tokyo, Japan, September 26, 2002 -- Oki Electric Industry Co., Ltd. (TSE: 6703) today announced the development of its new OD9241N 10-gigabit-per-second (Gbps) surface-mount optical receiver modules. These modules are designed in compliance with the multi-source agreement (MSA) announced in March 2002 by Agere Systems and Nortel Networks. Combining low power consumption, high transimpedance, and a compact surface-mount design based on the MSA, Oki now offers customers a cost-competitive, leading-edge product. The company began the shipment of sample products in September; shipment in volume is slated for November 2002.

"As the demands for 10-Gbps high-speed transmission over optical fibers grows, the requirements for standardized multi-source optical components grow more stringent, as these components allows system manufacturers to avoid costly and time-consuming system redesign," said Tetsuzo Taniguchi, President of the Optical Components Company at Oki Electric. "Through its introduction of high-performance optical receivers conforming to the MSA, we believe Oki leads the industry by meeting these more demanding market requirements."

The OD9241N, a surface-mount optical receiver module, converts an optical signal with a data rate of 10-Gbps to an electrical signal. This module is compliant with the leading industry MSA for optical receivers, which defines product-package dimensions, pin out and function assignments, and optical and electrical characteristics for small-form-factor surface-mount receivers, allowing customers to benefit from a wider range of compatible devices.

The optical receiver module incorporates Oki's distinctive Side-illuminated Mirror PIN Photodiode (SMPD), which features high responsivity and high frequency response, and a wide-bandwidth and low-noise transimpedance amplifier. This provides the module with high sensitivity and wide dynamic range (22dB), permitting operation with a single -5.2V power supply.

The module also adopts a passive alignment structure for optical coupling, which allows this 17-pin surface mount package to be manufactured at a thickness of only 2.95 mm, one of the thinnest packages available under the MSA. It can be mounted directly onto a printed circuit board, allowing system manufactures to save board space in the design of transceivers and receiver cards.

Oki intends to offer the new optical receiver modules for use in SONET, SDH, and 10-Gbit Ethernet applications, and to market them to worldwide system manufacturers of transceivers and stand-alone receiver cards requiring a small footprint, surface-mount capability, and multiple sources.
