Oki Introduces Three High-Power Pump Laser Modules for WDM Optical Systems

high-power 1,480-nm pump laser diode module "OL4128N-300" Tokyo, Japan, April 17, 2002 -- Oki Electric Industry Co., Ltd. today unveils to the worldwide market three high-power 1,480-nm pump laser diode modules for WDM (Wavelength Division Multiplexing) optical transmission. Oki's new laser modules, used for optical amplifiers in long-haul optical communications, can operate on up to 300 mW of power.

"High-power laser diode modules are a key component used in WDM fiber-optic communication networks," said Yoshito Saito, Senior Manager of the Advanced Optoelectronic Devices Department at Oki Electric. "As one of the leading provider of laser modules, Oki has quickly responded to market demand for broadband communications with these reliable and high-performance modules, indispensable for optical WDM networks."

The following pump laser modules are provided by Oki: the "OL4128N-200," with output power of up to 200 mW, the "OL4128N-250" (up to 250 mW of output power), and the "OL4128N-300" (up to 300 mW of output power). In order to provide such high optical output power, Oki worked to optimize the laser structure and to improve the efficiency of elements cooling. By deploying the new modules throughout long-haul WDM-based fiber-optic networks, customers can increase the distance between each EDFA (Erbium Doped Fiber Amplifier), thereby lowering the number of EDFAs needed to regenerate a signal, thus saving the customer significant infrastructural investment. In addition, the new modules support the high-performance requirements of WDM using EDFAs.

Oki intends to market these modules worldwide. Samples of these products will be available from May 1, 2002. Sales in volumes of the OL4128N-200/250 start on September 1, 2002, and sales in volume of the OL4128N-300 start on December 1, 2002.

Major characteristics of the modules:

  • Optical output of 200, 250, and 300 mW. Kink-free up to 120% of the optical output power
  • Built-in thermo-electric cooler
  • Built-in monitor photo diode
  • Single-mode fiber (PANDA fiber is optional.)
  • Butterfly package
