July 25, 2001, Tokyo, Japan -- Oki Electric Industry Co., Ltd. announced
today that it has established a new plant in Shenzhen, Guangdong Province, China
June 5 to produce automated teller machines (ATMs). The new company will handle
final assembly and testing of the ATMs. Commercial production will commence from
October 22.
Mr. Koyo Matsumae, executive vice president of Oki Electric's System Solution
Division says, "This move will accelerate our global ATM business operation. It
will allow Oki Electric to create a mass-production system that can deal with
the dramatic expansion in the ATM market and it will enable us to sell ATMs domestically
in China."
The new firm, dubbed Oki Electric Industry (Shenzhen) Co., Ltd., is a wholly
owned subsidiary of Oki Electric and is capitalized at HK$ 10 million. It has
already obtained an import/export license from the Chinese government.
Oki Electric Industry (Shenzhen) will target production of 3,000 ATM units
for fiscal 2001. In the second year, production will be increased to 10,000 units
and the product line will be expanded as well. Moreover, marketing of ATMs with
cash deposit/withdrawal functions, will commence in the Chinese market.
Materials procurement will be handled by Oki Data (Hong Kong) Ltd., an Oki
Electric Group firm, for Oki Electric Industry (Shenzhen). Accordingly, Oki will
increase its investment in Oki Data (Hong Kong) so that it can support procurement
operations for the ATM plant in Shenzhen, as well as continue current sales and
marketing activities for Oki printers and facsimiles.
Oki Electric, as Japan's top ATM vendor, has consigned the production of ATM
sub-units in China since 1997. Oki's ATM production system in China has gotten
off to a good start thanks to an effective quality management system that has
proven ideal for the manufacturing ATMs, which are comprised of numerous parts.
Oki Electric will realize an efficient production system of mechatronics,
including ATMs, by establishing a system that connects Oki Electric Industry (Shenzhen),
Oki Data (Hong Kong), and the Tomioka Factory. The Tomioka Factory will handle
