Oki Electric strengthens partnership with Globeset to develop new payment
systems for Internet-enabled mobile phones
New software will ensure secure transactions via i-mode*1
terminals
October 4, 2000, Tokyo, Japan -- Oki Electric Industry Co., Ltd.,
today announced it has strengthened ties with Globeset, a leading global supplier
of ePayment and cash-management products and services, to create solutions that
will ensure highly secure and convenient payment over the Internet, including
by mobile phone. The new capability will integrate Oki Electric's mobile phone
interconnect technology with Globeset's server-based ePayments technology.
"Japan's market for Internet-based mobile communications is rapidly expanding,"
said Kazushige Matsui, general manager of Oki Electric's Business Solutions Division.
"Developing secure payment systems for Internet-based purchasing, including those
made by mobile phones, are essential to strengthening the public's confidence
in this new technology and, ultimately, realizing this market's vast business
potential."
Oki Electric provides Japanese customers with a wide range of eCommerce solutions,
and has been marketing since 1998 Globeset's ServerWallet™
*2 and ServerPOS™ *3. These ePayment
products, the world's first server-based SET Secure Electronic Transaction™
*4 systems, are uniquely able to provide the level of security and
privacy eCommerce buyers, sellers and financial-service providers demand.
"Enhancing our ties with Oki Electric and its mobile-phone technology," said
Jack Antonini, Globeset president and CEO, "represents a significant leap forward
for Globeset in the Japanese market, where the demand for more secure ePayment
services is growing rapidly."
The strengthened alliance provides Oki Electric with access to key Globeset
technology, including source coding, and will result in joint development of new
technologies and products especially suited to Japanese needs. Local support and
maintenance will also be provided.
Oki Electric is planning a commercial launch by the end of this October of
a secure Internet payment system for mobile phones equipped with i-mode, NTT DoCoMo's
wireless Internet service. The new system also features a new Globeset-developed
SET protocol - online PIN extension (OPE)*5 functions. This leading-edge protocol enables consumers to use their ATM cards
for payments at merchant Internet sites.
"We believe the synergy between our two companies," said Matsui, "will provide
our customers with even more excellent ePayment solutions, especially for mobile
phones. The result will accelerate development of eCommerce in Japan."
Services based on these new products will also be available from Payment First
Corporation, which was established on June 20, 2000, by Oki Electric, NTT Data,
NTT Communications, NTT DoCoMo and others to support the Internet payment infrastructure.
