Oki Ships Low-Power LSIs Using SIMOX Wafer Process Technology
- The industry's first commercial application of the technology for personal and mobile communication products -
September 17, 1998, Tokyo, Japan -- Oki Electric Industry Co., Ltd.
today announced the commercial availability of low-power, high-performance silicon-on-insulator
(SOI) material-based LSIs using SIMOX (i.e. separation by implanted oxygen) wafer
process technology. This is the latest addition to the company's Silicon Platform
Architecture (SPA) modules. Shipments of the 0.35 um linewidth products will begin
midyear 1999, followed by the 0.20 um products by the yearend.
An wafer comprised of a thin, mono-crystalline silicon layer over insulator,
SOI material allows semiconductor manufacturers to produce devices with reduced
parasitic capacitance for faster circuit speed using significantly less power.
However, its poor material quality and high wafer cost has been impediment to
SOI's commercial application to date.
Developed by Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corporation (NTT), a SIMOX process
technology is a method to obtain higher quality, more competitively priced SOI
wafer material to fabricate commercial devices. Oki has been provided with the
technology by NTT Advanced Technologies Co., Ltd. and will use it for volume production
of silicon wafers for high-performance, low-power LSIs to be used in next generation
portable communication products.
"With its virtue to reduce power consumption while increasing IC performance
and complexity, SOI-based LSIs are ideal for portable communication systems which
must be powerful yet small in size," said Mr. Yasuaki Ozawa, Director and General
Manager of the LSI Division, Oki Electric Industry Co., Ltd. "Oki's expertise
in personal and mobile communication technology will allow us to make the most
of this new technology in product designing process."
Founded in 1881 as Japan's first telecommunications manufacturer, Oki Electric
Industry Co., Ltd. is a leader in the global marketplace. With more than 21,000
employees worldwide, Oki Electric manufactures and markets telecommunications
systems, information systems, and electronic devices.
The Silicon Platform Architecture (SPA) is Oki's system LSI development method
which allows customers to choose any combination of available resources and technology
modules, satisfying their particular application needs with customized offerings
in a short period of time.
