Access Network Domain

The access network domain plays an important role in NGNs by connecting communications carriers and service providers with the individuals and companies they serve. While communications carriers have historically used _copper lines_ to offer phone service to individual subscribers, today _the same line_ carries high-speed broadband services such as DSL in addition to telephone signals. Carriers are also investing heavily in optical fiber as the transmission media of choice for fixed broadband access in the future due to its high-speed and stable transmission characteristics. As ubiquitous service-anytime, anywhere, anyone-becomes the norm, demand for technologies such as conventional cellular phone service and wireless LAN access is being augmented by an increasingly noticeable desire for mobile high-speed broadband service and otherwise seamless communications.

OKI provides a variety of access network solutions to meet these customer needs.

Access Network Solutions from OKI

The popularization of broadband service drives the evolution of the access network domain, with technologies such as optical fiber and wireless networking joining traditional copper wiring. Customers are increasingly demanding high performance (high speed), high reliability, and low cost in access networks as phone, Internet, and television broadcast services are provided simultaneously.

OKI offers three types of access solution to meet these customer needs.

Concept: High performance, high reliability, low cost

Wireless access

This domain enjoys the highest expectations from the standpoint of ubiquitous networking. OKI offers solutions for 3G mobile networking as well as WiMAX solutions that support seamless communications and high-speed broadband service, providing both fixed and mobile access in a single system.

Optical access

This domain will be the mode of choice for fixed access in the coming years. Each of OKI's GE-PON (individual), GPON (enterprise), and COF (long-distance) solutions represents a system capable of delivering ultra-high-speed, high-reliability performance.

Copper access

This domain provides both high-speed broadband and existing phone service. OKI offers VDSL solutions that support high-speed broadband service as well as phone migration solutions that can deliver existing phone service quality as a key infrastructure even as it evolves toward an IP network.

Product Features

Domain Product name Features
Wireless WiMAX
  • Can implement communications by both mobile handsets and fixed terminals (IEEE 802.16e compliant).
  • Supports seamless communications at home, outdoors, at the office, etc.
  • Enables high-speed data transmission compared to 3G (an international cellular phone standard) networks.
  • Enables high-quality transmission with QoS control compared to Wi-Fi.
Optical GE-PON system
GE-PON II system
  • GE-PON : High-speed, bidirectional communications at 1 Gbps
  • Allows the cost of fiber to be dramatically reduced.
  • Provides assured communications quality with QoS control and streamlined maintenance with remote access.
  • Enables more flexible route design due to expanded fiber loss budget and support for up to 64 branches (GE-PON II only).
GPON
  • ITU-T G.984 Series compliant optical access system with speeds of 2.5 Gbps down and 1.25 Gbps up
  • Supports full TDM, ATM, and Ethernet signal service.
  • Can be used to provide high-reliability systems with 50-ms redundancy switching and other features.
COF
  • Proprietary OKI access multiplex transmission technology using the CDM coding scheme popularized by cellular phones
  • Can guarantee 100M Ethernet bandwidth while assuring inter-channel security.
  • Supports multiplexing of up to sixteen 100M Ethernet signals and 1-wire bidirectional transmission using a single wavelength.
Copper VDSL
  • Supports VDSL (5-band) communications at speeds of 100 Mbps down and 40 Mbps up.
  • Features QAM modulation to deliver low latency compared to other modulation schemes.
  • Center equipment features a compact 8-port design that can be installed in even cramped settings where space is at a premium.
Phone migration
  • System that facilitates migration as the existing phone network transitions to IP technology, preserving the quality of phone service with conventional telephones and copper wiring
