    • Global warming which is caused by carbon dioxide exhausted by burning fossil fuels, such as petroleum, is the most serious of global environmental problems. And energy conservation, including power, is a critical issue as a countermeasure to global warming.
    In order to decrease power consumption, which is approximately 80% of all energy used, OKI established energy conservation promotion sessions. Semiconductor manufacturing affiliated companies of the OKI Group, which have a high power consumption, participate in these sessions, and make efforts to conserve energy along with Oki Electric Industry Co. Ltd. Since the production of semiconductor manufacturing affiliated companies decreased in fiscal 1998, the basic unit index increased compared with fiscal 1997.     1.Example of energy conservation by improving manufacturing processes
    In the board manufacturing process, idle time is generated when manufactured products are changed from product A to product B due to setup issues. Since a manufacturing system is running during this idle time, power is wasted. We installed a JIT* production system to minimize this idle time and to decrease the running time of the system. As a result, approximately 20% of power consumption was decreased.

    This product system features the complete elimination of waste by constructing a flexible production line and decreasing lead time.

    2.Installing energy conservation type air conditioning system
    Power consumption is high in the semiconductor manufacturing process, where approximately 43% of power is spent to operate air conditioning systems.
    Therefore we installed FMU*type air conditioning systems in semiconductor factories, which are superb in energy conservation, and decreased power consumption by approximately 53% compared with conventional air conditioning systems.

    One air conditioning system for cleanrooms of semiconductor factories. Since the air circulating speed is slow, the pressure loss is small and power consumption is low.

    3.Semiconductor manufacturing factories received commendations as top rated energy management factories
    Oki Electric Industry Co. Ltd. has been making efforts to conserve energy. These efforts were recognized with two affiliated semiconductor manufacturing companies receiving commendations as top rated energy management factories.
